SUMMARY:ArtsLink Presents Tray Dahl & the Jugtime Ragband
DESCRIPTION:ArtsLink presents Tray Dahl and the Jugtime Ragband on Thursday\, November 9\, at 7:00 pm at The Parlor Theater at Doolin Center\, 253 Main Street\, in downtown New Martinsville. Tickets for ArtsLink members are $10 for an individual and $20 for a family (2 adults and kids under 18)\, for non-members $15 for individuals and $25 for a family\, student tickets are $5\, and will be available at the door. Cash\, checks\, and credit cards are accepted. \nTray Dahl & The Jugtime Ragband is not jug band\, ragtime\, or Dixieland. It is an energetic amalgamation of all the popular styles of the 1920’s/30’s – jazz\, a little blues\, a bit of swing\, a pinch old-time gospel\, and even classic showtunes – all immersed in an early 20th century New Orleans sound. They get people’s feet stomping in a roaring twenties kind of way. Their sound has been described by many as “speakeasy” or “prohibition era” music. The songs match the early New Orleans jazz/blues instrumentation combo of tenor banjo and trumpet with upbeat Dixieland and swing tempos underlying a heavy dose of powerful 1920’s inspired vocals stylistically akin to Bessie Smith\, Clara Smith\, and Louis Armstrong. Their main influences include Louis Prima\, Bix Beiderbecke\, Louis Armstrong\, and the Boswell Sisters. They play songs composed by some of the best songwriters from the early and mid-twentieth century alongside our original tunes which are heavily influenced by their work. \n  \nFunding for this program made possible with assistance from WETZ/WYMJ Radio. This program is presented with financial assistance from the WV Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the WV Commission on the Arts. This engagement of Tray Dahl and the Jugtime Ragband is made possible through the Special Presenters Initiatives program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History. Additional funding provided by the Harry E. and Olive T. Barth Charitable Trust\, a component fund of the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley. SUMMARY:The Everly Set  Thursday\, October 5\, 2023 7pm Lincoln Theater
DESCRIPTION:In 1957\, teens Phil and Don Everly supercharged the vocal sound of Rock’n’Roll with “Bye Bye Love” and “Wake Up Little Susie”\, unleashing the sparkling vocal harmonies that would influence The Beatles\, Simon & Garfunkel\, The Beach Boys\, The Hollies\, The Eagles\, Peter Paul & Mary\, and the Bee Gees. \nNow\, six decades later\, two acclaimed singer-songwriters with a mind-bending three-decade age difference combine millennial pluck with baby-boomer sass to present The Everly Set: Sean Altman & Jack Skuller Celebrate The Everly Brothers\, featuring Bye Bye Love\, Wake Up Little Susie\, Cathy’s Clown\, All I Have To Do Is Dream\, When Will I Be Loved\, Crying In The Rain\, Love Hurts\, Bird Dog\, Claudette\, Walk Right Back\, and more hits and rarities in concert. \nJack Skuller signed his first recording contract at just 14 years old. His debut single “Love is a Drum” was called “arguably the best single released by anyone [that] year” by The Examiner\, and The New York Post labeled Skuller “a mini Jack White.” His music career has since earned him a reputation for powerful live shows rooted in old school rock’n’roll. In his teen years\, Skuller performed his original music for thousands of people across the U.S. as a Disney recording artist. \nEx-Rockapella star Sean Altman is “tuneful and sharply witty” (Los Angeles Times) and “relentlessly clever” (Chicago Tribune)\, with “catchy melodies\, clever arrangements and lyrics that yield satiric gems” (Washington Post)\, combining “the tunefulness of the Beatles and the spot-on wit of Tom Lehrer” (Boston Globe) with a “silky tenor voice that produced chills” (New York Times). Altman — widely regarded as “the Father of Modern A Cappella” — co-founded and led the pioneering vocal group Rockapella through its heyday on the Emmy-winning daily PBS-TV series Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?\, for which he co-wrote the famous theme song.
